Concept
Spanish culture and tradition have used a very limited number of symbols to immortalize Spanish people. Bullfighting, religion, flamenco and the red of blood have all been used to represent braveness, faith, strength and passion. Even these signs describe the Spain that only half of the world has on it’s mind; the richness of it’s culture can not be understood with only a handful of symbols. This ballet is born to show that Spanish music and personality are not limited to the sardonic bullfighter or the seductive Mercedes, to the mischivious arrogance that we saw in Petipa’s “Don Quixote”, or the sensuality from Roland Petit’s “Carmen”. Spanish music has a versatility that has been rarely shown on stage. This piece wants to show that genuine music from Spain can be danced from a contempory perspective using the lines of classical ballet.
«On behalf of joy» is a celebration of the soul and the body: the joy of being alive, as well as the demonstration that every act in life is a victory over death.
